Acer's Predator 21 X puts a curved screen and dual GTX 1080s in a laptop

Acer’s new Predator 21 X is a monster. Not only have this machine’s designers put a curved 21-inch display on a laptop for the first time ever, they’ve also gone and given ittwo GeForce GTX 1080 GPUs as well. Add in five cooling fans, a 7th-generation Intel Core K-series processor, and space for as much as four terabytes of SSD storage, and you have a laptop that’s beyond obscene.

Unveiling the 21 X at IFA in Berlin today, Acer acknowledges that this laptop is more of a proof of engineering acumen than any sort of "big seller" retail product. Each Predator 21 X will be made to order, starting in January of next year (which is how Acer can advertise today that it will have an Intel CPU that technically hasn't yet been announced). Among its other cool features and specs, there's also room for four DD4 slots that top out at 64GB of RAM, Tobii eye-tracking, a mechanical keyboard, a 4.2 sound system, a window to show off one of the big fans, and a numpad that flips over to turn into a touchpad. Oh, and it also has an SD card slot. How practical!

Seeing the 21 X in person is a hilarious but also charming experience. We often say gaming laptops are ridiculous, but this one — with its gaping upside-down smile generated by the gap between the keyboard and the curved screen — is that extra bit more ludicrous. How do you even begin to judge or weigh the merits of such an outlandish creation? At 8kg, the 21 X weighs more than seven of Acer's newly introduced Swift 7 laptops, offering the direct opposite to the Taiwanese company's ultrathin portable.

'Resident Evil' Trailer: 'The Final Chapter' For The Most Successful Video Game Movie Series

13892024_10155187767269478_4966882186245514005_n

We’ve talked a lot about video game movies and how Hollywood has mostly failed for the last twenty-three years to make a viable top-tier franchise from a video game property. But there is one quasi-exception. Sony’s Resident Evil franchise isn’t just the exception to the rule in terms of video game movies, it is something of an anomaly in any number of ways.

First of all, it’s a (now) six-film series in an era when many would-be franchises top out at two or three. And it’s actually ending on its own terms, which, reboot or no, is almost heartwarming in this day-and-age. It’s also the only live-action video game-based film property to get more than one live-action theatrical sequel. With Paul W.S. Anderson directing four out of the six installments and writing all six of them, this franchise has a stamp of authorship that is becoming all the rarer in our brand-driven franchise world. And did I mention that it’s an R-rated series that has thrived in a distinctly PG-13 environment?

Oh, and with five films grossing a total of $915.9 million worldwide, it is the most successful horror franchise of all time (suck it, Hannibal Rising!). Did I mention that, save for The Twilight Saga and The Hunger Games series, this is one of the most successful female-led franchise of all time? Because, yeah, this has been the Milla Jovovich Show from the beginning back in 2002, when Resident Evil earned $102m worldwide on a $33m budget. The franchise peaked in 2010 with Resident Evil: Afterlife, the first 3D installment, which earned $60.1m domestic and an eye-popping $296m worldwide sum on a $60m budget.

It’s funny how we all fret about the bankability of female superhero movies and yet Resident Evil is six movies strong while Kate Beckinsale’s Underworld will also be dropping a fifth film next January. Oh, and Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy made $458 million worldwide on a $40m budget two years ago. And, by the by, with all the fretting about the future of video game movies, maybe we should notice that two of the more successful ones, Resident Evil: Afterlife, Resident Evil: Retribution ($240m) and the first Tomb Raider ($274m), are female-fronted action/sci-fi pictures.

We’re going to get a lot of video game franchises in the next few years, so maybe we should acknowledge that Bayonetta may be a safer bet than Uncharted. I didn’t care much for the first film back in 2002 and only caught up with the rest when Afterlife was about to drop in theaters. I have a certain fondness of the ongoing franchise as I think there is an important role for B-movie franchises that don’t need to crack $500 million worldwide to break even. Come what may, I’ll be there until the end.

Anyway, Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (we’ll see about that), opens January 27, 2017. It co-stars Ali Larter, Iain Glen, Shawn Roberts, Ruby Rose, Eoin Macken, William Levy, Fraser James and Rola. As always, we’ll see, but I’m weirdly excited to see what amounts to a series finale for a franchise that started back when I was in college.

The first gameplay trailer for Quake Champions has arrived

Following the massive success of Doom 2016, it seemed inevitable that id Software would follow up with a reboot of its other famous first-person shooter franchise, Quake. Its existence was confirmed at E3 when the studio revealed a CGI trailer for Quake Champions, and now the first gameplay trailer has been released as part of QuakeCon’s opening ceremony.

The upcoming “competitive multiplayer arena shooter” looks very much like a modern imagining of 1999’s Quake III: Arena. The 75-second video shows that development on the game is moving along at a fast pace, and, as you would expect, there's an emphasis on high-speed action. As the trailer’s Sauron-like voice announces “I see you,” we get to see some of Quake Champions’ weapons, including shotguns, assault rifles, rail guns, lasers, and rocket launchers – and yes, rocket jumps are possible.

The verticle space appears to play a big role in the game; a lot of the footage shows player flying through the air using launch pads or the aforementioned rocket jumps.

“We’re focusing on pure Quake gameplay,” said id Software boss Tim Willits. Speaking about the absence of weapon loadouts in the game, he added: “You time the pick-up right, or you kill an opponent and take it. That’s how you get a gun in a Quake game!”

Quake Champions will feature a number of character classes, each one offering different skills and some with varying speeds. “The classes only add value to gameplay,” Willits said.

The game will initially launch only on the PC and run at “120Hz with unlocked framerates.” Much like the recent Doom, id Software is aiming for Quake Champions to work smoothly across a wide range of hardware. "You'll be able to turn down your specs and get a decent game at lower-end. But we want to shine on good systems."

There will be a public gameplay demo this Saturday at QuakeCon, and a closed Beta is expected sometime early next year. Keep up to date with developments at quake.com.

One Person Made A Video Game To Rival ‘Final Fantasy XV’ And ‘Devil May Cry’ By Himself

A big deal is made about video game companies employing dozens, if not hundreds of people to make AAA titles. However, one person made an indie video game that had the visuals of “Final Fantasy XV” and the combat style of “Devil May Cry,” and he did it all by himself.

Yang Bing, an indie video game developer living in South Korea, released a trailer of his title called “Lost Soul Aside,” and the world watched in awe as the work of one person held its own against games that were made by entire teams of professionals from giant brands. Twinfinite described the game as having impressive visuals and fast-paced combat that is reminiscent of titles like “Ninja Gaiden.”

Supposedly, Bing was inspired to create his game by “Final Fantasy XV” of all things. The first trailer for the latest installment of the legendary franchise of Square Enix came out two years ago, which is about the same time that Bing started working on his game.

After releasing the trailer, Bing enjoyed an outpouring of praise, congratulations, and encouragement from viewers who were clearly impressed with what the South Korean achieved. Some even offered their services or monetary support to help him finish his title.

“I read many comments yesterday, thank you for encouraging me and thank you for asking to help, I can say nothing else but thank you guys,” Bing wrote on his Facebook page. “Some people said they get some motivation to do their own game, I’m very glad to be that guy though I’m just a normal developer. Thank you again.”

Bing has also been encouraged to resort to Kickstarter to fund his game, Siliconera reports. However, he stressed that creating a fundraising campaign would be too much work and responsibility right now. Then again, “Sony” and “Epic Games” have already approached Bing, so it’s more than likely that he will get the funding and support he needs.

The new trailer confirms that Time Breaker Bardock will be included in the game, along with Imperfect Cell and Android 16.

In the "Dragon Ball" universe, Bardock is a low-class Saiyan warrior, the husband of Gine, and the father of Raditz and Goku. Meanwhile, Imperfect Cell, when in perfect mode, is the ultimate creation of Dr. Gero designed to have all the abilities of the greatest fighters to have ever lived or visited Earth. As for Android 16, he is another of Dr. Gero's creations who was originally designed to serve Gero's vendetta against Goku.

New characters, such as Zarbon, Turles and Janemba are also coming to "Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2." Janemba is the main antagonist in the film "Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn." Zarbon is one of the villains in the "Dragon Ball Z" anime, while Turles is a rogue Saiyan who bears a strong resemblance to Goku.

The Trailer for This Space Game Is Like a Cold War Mystery Film

3104121-screenshot 1.png

Gravity was released in 2013 and attempted to represent what it would be like to be stranded on a space station. Since then, there've been a couple games that have tried to capture a similar, suspenseful effect. Outreach, a new game from developer Pixel Spill, is aiming for that general feel, as well--but with a very different narrative approach.

Pixel Spill announced the game today with a few details and a live-action trailer, which you can view below. The trailer helps establish the basis for the game's story, as it shows American intelligence agents uncovering a grand Soviet cover-up of a covert military space project. The trailer is also very well done, and gives a nice idea of the tone we can expect from the game.

Outreach is set in the 1980s, and you take control of a Soviet cosmonaut tasked with uncovering what happened on board a military space station. You're alone on the station, searching for hints as to the fate of its crew. This is the project hinted at in the video, and I would hazard a guess that the old man in the trailer is the character that you'll take control of in the game. The studio is focusing on making the game accurately depict the 80s. In a press release, it states, "The environments, technology, and clothing have all been lovingly crafted and expanded from historical designs, photos, and archive footage."

It's a first-person narrative-focused game, and Pixel Spill emphasizes that gameplay revolves around navigating a zero-gravity environment: "Push yourself off, time your landings, and grapple for handrails on the exterior of the station. Inside the station, move through confined environments on your search for clues. Your coordination and reflexes are the only protection you have from the void."

Overwatch Summer Games trailer hides a mysterious secret

Blizzard released a surprise update to Overwatch yesterday featuring a new soccer-styled game mode called Lúcioball and a big mess of Olympic-themed goodies. But there was something else in there too, hidden away from casual viewers: A string of text that the Best Minds of the Overwatch subreddit think is a salted and hashed password that may—just may—be a new Sombra tease.

The thread is fascinating both for the amount of effort being put into unlocking the secret, and also the Very Serious Discussion about encryption and security, which includes a handy explanation of what 'salting' actually means.

“They don't store your password in plain text. They put it through an algorithm to make it all garbled,” a user named Undeadfish wrote, referring to the process of hashing a password, or encrypting it. “Now, the problem with just doing that is that two people might have the same password and the algorithm would garble them to be the same output. Instead, they started adding a 'salt' into it. So, they put random gibberish at the start of your password and store the gibberish alongside your login info. That way when it goes through the algorithm it creates a different garbled bunch of letters from another person with the same password.”

The downside to all that extra security is that it makes figuring out stuff like this so much more difficult than it would otherwise be. Digital sleuths have already tried using a huge range of numbers as the password, as well as plays on the time shown on Tracer's clock (13:37, naturally) and leet-speak variations of Sombra. Blizzard clearly anticipated the amount of effort that would be put into breaking the code—works is also underway at the Sombra ARG Wiki and on the Game Detectives Discord server—and took steps to ensure that it wouldn't be easy.

(By the way, the code is hard to make out in the screen cap above but a post in the thread, which nobody seems to disagree with, says it's "U2FsdGVkX1+vupppZksvRf5pq5g5XjFRlipRkwB0K1Y96Qsv2L m+31cmzaAILwytX/z66ZVWEQM/ccf1g+9m5Ubu1+sit+A9cenD xxqklaxbm4cMeh2oKhqlHhdaBKOi6XX2XDWpa6+P5o9MQw==," without the quotes. Good luck with that.)

I'll be honest with you: Encryption and ARGs are not my forte, so much of what's being discussed on Reddit and elsewhere goes way over my head. One interesting thing I did notice, though (and without any help!) is that the code does not appear in Tracer's blink trail in the Xbox version of the Overwatch Summer Games trailer, but only the one posted in the official PlayOverwatch channel that I've embedded below. Significant? Eh, probably not, but I've reached out to Blizzard to ask, just in case. I'll let you know if I hear anything.
