Watch Dogs 2 Gets A Weird Teaser Trailer

Ubisoft releases a teaser trailer forWatch Dogs 2, which indicates that a full reveal for the upcoming sequel will take place this coming Wednesday, June 8th.

The first Watch Dogs was the highlight of Ubisoft’s E3 2012 press conference, and so many assumed that Watch Dogs 2would close out the show for the company at this year’s event. On the contrary, Ubisoft has decided to spill the beans on Watch Dogs 2 ahead of its E3 press conference next week, releasing a teaser trailer today for a full reveal that will take place on Wednesday, June 8th at 9:00AM Pacific.
The teaser trailer for Watch Dogs 2 gives players little to no information as to what to expect from the sequel, except that it will likely retain the smartphone hacking mechanics found in the original release. All the teaser trailer shows is a man’s butt while he presses buttons on his smartphone without looking at the screen. As he does this, the background flickers between various images, which are mostly nonsensical without proper context.
It’s possible that this mystery man is Watch Dogs 1 protagonist Aiden Pearce, but with rumors pointing to Watch Dogs 2 having a new protagonist, it could be someone else entirely. The teaser trailer simply doesn’t reveal enough to know either way, and so it will be interesting to see who it is come June 8th.
Ubisoft’s decision to give Watch Dogs 2 a full reveal on June 8th comes as somewhat of a surprise, especially considering Ubisoft’s E3 2016 press conference is set to take place next week. Perhaps Ubisoft’s press conference is too packed to spend too much time showcasing Watch Dogs 2, and maybe the decision was made to release the game’s trailer a week in advance in order to use E3 to highlight different games instead.

The decision also calls into question what game will be used as Ubisoft’s show-ending reveal. Since E3 2012, Ubisoft has closed its press conferences with surprise reveals of brand new gaming projects, including the likes of the first Watch DogsThe DivisionRainbow Six Siege, and more, and there’s no reason to think that 2016 will be any different.
With many of Ubisoft’s major franchises having just received new games, many assumed that Watch Dogs 2 would be the show-closer, but between this teaser and Ubisoft’s E3 2016 hype trailer, that no longer appears to be the case. Perhaps instead of Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft’s E3 press conference will end with our first look at a new Raymangame, or if fans are really lucky, the resurgence of the long in-development Beyond Good & Evil 2.
Whatever Ubisoft decides to do at E3, the fact that the company is pulling the curtain back onWatch Dogs 2 a week in advance means that it probably has some surprises up its sleeve for the big show. In the meantime, fans should be excited to see what Watch Dogs 2 has in store when the game is given a proper reveal come June 8th.
Watch Dogs 2 is presumably in development for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
